Native American Women Elders and Storytellers of Washington
This project is an important component of a larger Native American Stories of Washington project of NorthWest
Heritage Resources. The project will collect oral histories from five Native American women elders, most of whom are
also important storytellers in their tribal communities. The women are from five different Native American
tribes in Washington – Lummi, Yakama, Jamestown S'Klallam, Colville Federated Tribes, Walulapum. The project
is in response to concerns of Washington state Native elder storytellers, that their oral histories and
repertories of traditional stories be preserved for future generations. NWHR has partnered with Jack Straw
Foundation and the Longhouse Education and Cultural Center at Evergreen State College to provide the
women with professional quality recordings of their life histories and stories, a public radio series,
and to produce a CD if they wish.
