One of the special areas of emphasis identified in the Women’s History Consortium enabling legislation was "Encouraging collection
and preservation of materials important to understanding Washington women's history, with special emphasis on the last several decades."
The Advisory Board of the Women's History Consortium identified the 1977 International Women’s Year Conferences in Ellensburg and
Houston as important events in the women's movement in Washington state in the late 20th century. The Women’s History Consortium
is beginning an oral history project to record stories of conference participants.
Candidates for this oral history project are being chosen according to a set of criteria developed by a committee of the WHC.
The committee is considering the role played by potential candidates in leadership and development of the Ellensburg Conference.
Other considerations are age, political perspective, ethnicity, geographic location, and other issues to create a good mix of people
who represent different experiences and points of view.
When the project is completed the full texts of the interviews along with the recorded audio will be available on the Women’s
History Consortium website. The website will also have bibliographic and other materials related to the International Women’s
Year Conferences. Look for the completion of this project in mid-2007. The WHC is also encouraging persons who have materials
related to these events to consider donating the materials to one of the
Women's History Consortium Partner archives.
