Significance of the collection:

Catherine May was the first elected woman Representative from the State of Washington.

Mrs. May was the first Representative from the State of Washington, in quite a few years, to be appointed to the Committee on Agriculture, an assignment that Mrs. May held during her entire tenure in Congress. Catherine May co-sponsored legislation to provide women with equal pay for equal work. President Kennedy signed into law the "Equal Pay Act of 1963."
